How to clean a leather sofa

The leather cover is a “natural proof” of a sofa’s beauty. In a high-end sofa, the leather is processed with fine techniques that preserve all its characteristics: wrinkles, stretch marks, veins, dyschromia and scars that affected the animal during its life. 

The mantle, at the end of the manufacturing process, is unique and incomparable, never the same. This peculiarity represents a clear sign of the naturalness of the product.  

In order to maintain over time the natural characteristics of a leather sofa, a proper maintenance is fundamental. There are many ways to get rid of stains, without any damage to the couch’s coating.

Maintenance

One of the advantages of choosing a leather sofa is that it only requires few precautions to preserve its natural beauty: leather must be kept away from direct light and heat sources. Moreover, during rainy days, it is advisable to aerate the room so as to provide the good ventilation.

Cleaning 

Cleaning is crucial to preserve the durability of the product. 

In the first place, it’s sufficient to daily dust the sofa with a soft and dry cloth.  For a more accurate cleaning, instead, use a soft cloth soaked with a mixture of distilled water and mild soap.

Vigorously rub the leather.  

Then, the leather needs to dry away from sunlight or heat sources. 

Try not to use this deep cleaning too often, as the continuous contact with water and detergents might affect the texture of the leather. 

Also, it is not advisable the usage of creams and chemical products. For example, for a particular kind of leather, the aniline one, every kind of liquid product should be avoided. A dry cloth will be highly enough.

Stains

When a leather sofa stains, it is often necessary to turn to specialists. Nevertheless, in some cases it is possible to do something from home, with some very easy and fast remedies. 

Oil, butter and cosmetics, are the precious ingredients to rapidly intervene on your couch. 

Lightly swab the surface with a cloth or some paper towel. Cleanse the stain with a small quantity of water and mild soap mixture.

Prints

Ink

Use the soft eraser paying attention to not rub too vigorously in order to not affect the colour of the leather. 

Beer, wine, coffee, tea and milk

Lightly swab the surface with a cloth or some paper towel. Cleanse the stain with a small amount of water; if the mark will not disappear, try to add some soap to the mixture. 

Chewing gum, candle wax

Let cool the area with an ice cube wrapped in a cling film, then gentle remove the gum or wax. If some trails will still be visible, try with a soft eraser. Never use chemical or alcoholic solutions.
