The sofa is a piece of furniture that is part of our daily life and it’s something we use differently according to our age. Indeed, we learn to love the sofa from an early age and that’s why its role is so important! With time and without realising it, we share memorable moments with it, sometimes beautiful, sometimes less beautiful – yet always important. Eventually we recognise its role as the protagonist of our home.
Let’s try to go through the most important stages of this powerful and special relationship.
As children, the sofa is a very popular place for us for various reasons. In fact most of the time the sofa can be found in the part of the house where there are ‘the grown-ups’. Of course which child doesn’t prefer getting ‘in the way’ of Mum and Dad instead of playing in their room?
When we are small, the sofa is a kingdom that attracts us like a playground and we want to conquer it at any cost. It’s soft, it’s big, there’s always an adult to keep us company, it’s perfect to jump on and in no time at all it can turn from an island in the middle of the sea into a planet in outer space. All it takes is a bit of imagination.
Many of us probably found that we grew up with the same sofa at home over many years but others will remember that sometimes our parents decided to change it and get a nicer one. Of course perhaps our teenage years prevented us from appreciating such choices though.
However, at this stage of life, whether we like it or not, the sofa is probably the place where we experience the most delicate and intense moments of our adolescence. We take refuge on it to cry if something went wrong at school, punch it if we are angry, invite friends home to spend hours studying, play video games on it or even just have a chat.
Then, just like that, we find that we have grown up and are living on our own and what is one of the first things you think about when you go to live on your own? Getting a sofa! Once again, the sofa becomes the place where we do most of our activities at home. We eat, work, fall asleep whilst watching a movie and do countless other things either alone or in company.
This stage of our life might be very long or very short but in both cases, the next stage for many of us sees the arrival of a young family with young children. The dilemma here concerns the balance of space, which will depend on the number of family members and the size of the rooms in the house. Thinking through our daily habits, our choice of sofa will have to satisfy different needs that will determine its size, covering, colour and, of course, will determine who will be the king or queen of that oasis of well-being. As is easy to imagine, in the case of young children, it will certainly not be the parents who will win.
And what’s next? Well, next we have gotten even older and the children have all grown up and left, meaning that we can enjoy our sofa again or perhaps even change it and get a new one – or even two, or even add to it with a nice armchair. Whatever the case, our sofa will once again become the place of dreams, just like when we were little.
