Since its birth the sofa has experienced a lot of different evolutions. There are many references to it in the ancient Greek culture, in the Ottoman one, and yet in French, Italian and English ones. Thus, it is not easy to understand what are the elements that made this evolution possible.
It is well known the anecdote where the Count of Chesterfield, asked an artisan to create for him a padded structure so as his suits didn’t get wrinkly. The result was the iconic Chesterfield model, the one with the capitonné pattern.
The sofa bed was born around 1600, except for the model with the retractile bed structure, that dates back to 1900. Bernardo Castro, an Italian designer who moved to America when he was 15, designed this model version in order to offer people a practical and space-saving product, perfect even for smaller houses.
But sofas have been and still are used with many different intents. Ancient Greek philosophers used them as a desk during their classes, and that’s probably thanks to this comfort experience that they were so wise.
Moreover, in modern times, the sofa has experienced major innovations in order to make it more distinctive than the common bed.
It is frequent to find people that believe that having a break at the office on a comfortable sofa can improve productivity and release stress. After a long work day it can even be dangerous to immediately take the car and drive home; taking few moments of relax on the “work couch” is a good and safe choice.
At home, the sofa plays different roles. First of all, it represents the “promised land” after a long and tough day. It is just enough to have a quick look at it, to immediately feel a wellbeing sensation. Best spot where to dedicate themselves to the favourite hobbies, like reading, listening to music or watching a new TV series. During the weekends, it has almost become a habit for those who love an afternoon nap or just want to sleep longer in the morning, when starting a new day is too hard. For those who like having people coming over, sofa is seen as a stage of socialisation. The list could be even longer considering that lot of people love eating, working, studying, listening to music or relaxing with the partner on their sofa.
