What are ‘semi-finished products’ for sofas? The answer is much simpler than you might imagine. Semi-finished products are nothing more than the materials with which the sofa is made.
When a sofa is put into production, following the technical specifications provided by the Calia Italia Study Centre, the first shaping of the materials that give life to the supporting structure (the drum) and the sofa’s upholstery is carried out.
Wood, selected at source and seasoned for at least two years, is used for the structures and it is the material at the base of each Calia Italia sofa. The most used woods are beech, fir and plywood. It is the carpenters themselves who carefully check, centimetre by centimetre, that all the wooden drums and feet (for models using this type of material) strictly comply with the initial designs. It is an invisible process that ensures solid structures on which to rest peacefully.
The feet of the sofas are mainly designed using modelling software and 3D printers for prototypes. In the structure of a sofa the feet play a fundamental role both in functional and aesthetic terms. It is for this reason, depending on the model and its design, wood, metal or other variants are selected.
The padding is the real substance of every sofa – the fundamental part that ensures optimal comfort. For this reason Calia Italia chooses to use different types and combinations of padding and can include both artificial or natural materials, depending on the comfort you want to achieve.
The light, elastic polyurethane foam guarantees exceptional comfort to the seats. It is a material capable of deforming during sitting and is able to recover its initial shape immediately after stress.
Calia Italia uses polyurethanes of different densities, which are resistant to static and dynamic fatigue and have a very low loss of lift. This ensures exceptional resistance to prolonged loads over time.
Memory Foam interacts with the weight and warmth of the body, remembering the deformations received for a few seconds and then gradually regaining its original shape.
Polyester fibre flakes, on the other hand, give the sofa a harmonious and compact shape and give some parts of the sofa, such as the backrests and armrests, a wonderful softness.
Another extremely valuable material used for padding, with high compressibility and elasticity, is goose down.
Thanks to the realisation of semi-finished products, the comfort experience of Calia Italia sofas begins to take shape.
